Mysore Airport, officially known as Mandakalli Airport (MYQ), serves the historic and cultural royal city of Mysuru in Karnataka, India. While the airport plays a vital role in regional connectivity, its infrastructure—particularly its runway length—is a frequent topic of discussion among aviation experts, local authorities, and travelers looking to boost tourism and trade in the region.
Current Runway Dimensions and Specifications
The airfield features a single primary runway designed to handle targeted regional traffic:
- Designation: 09/27
- Length: 1,740 meters (5,709 feet)
- Width: 30 meters (98 feet)
- Surface Material: High-grade concrete
- Elevation: 731 meters (2,398 feet) above mean sea level
What the Current Length Supports
Because of its 1,740-meter length, Mysore Airport is ideally configured for turboprop and short-haul regional aircraft rather than massive wide-body or standard large narrow-body commercial jets.
- Primary Aircraft: The runway regularly accommodates turboprop workhorses like the ATR 72 and similar regional commuter planes.
- Operational Limits: Larger commercial aircraft, such as the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737, generally require longer runways (typically starting around 2,000 to 2,500 meters depending on weight and temperature) to land and take off safely with a full payload. Consequently, these larger jets cannot routinely operate out of Mysore in its current configuration.
The Push for Expansion
Mysuru is a booming tourist hub—drawing millions of visitors annually for events like the Dasara festival, as well as heritage tourism, tech development, and industrial growth. To accommodate larger commercial jetliners and direct flights from major international or long-distance domestic hubs, state authorities and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) have long evaluated proposals to expand Runway 09/27.
Plans have periodically progressed to extend the runway length significantly (with proposals targeting lengths upwards of 2,300 to 2,750 meters). However, such expansions require critical land acquisition, environmental clearances, and infrastructure adjustments.
Until those major infrastructure milestones are fully realized, Mysore Airport’s 1,740-meter runway remains a compact, efficient gateway tailored to connecting Mysuru smoothly with key regional destinations.
