The Boy Behind the Screen: Unveiling Song Kang’s Formative Years and Early Life

Before he earned the title of the “Son of Netflix” and captured millions of hearts across the globe in hits like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon, Song Kang was just a quiet kid growing up in Suwon, South Korea. While the global spotlight now illuminates his every move, his childhood and formative years reveal a surprisingly grounded upbringing steeped in a unique collision of physical fitness and creative arts.

An Athletic and Artistic Household

Born on April 23, 1994, Song Kang grew up in a close-knit family of four, consisting of his parents, himself, and a younger brother born in 1998. His household naturally straddled two entirely different worlds:

  • The Athletic Pedigree: Athletics run deep in the Song family bloodline. His father was a former artistic gymnast, and his grandfather was a wrestler. Growing up surrounded by this active environment, Song Kang developed a naturally athletic frame and a love for staying moving, though he humorously noted he never felt cut out to pursue professional sports.
  • The Musical Influence: Balancing out the high-energy athletic background, his mother worked as a piano teacher. Music became a core staple of his early routine, and he even took home several awards from elementary school piano competitions. Though he occasionally resisted practicing as a boy, those formative musical lessons quietly laid the foundation for his later on-screen performances and talent showcases.

From Blueprint Dreams to Cinematic Sparks

Long before he ever considered stepping in front of a camera, Song Kang envisioned a completely different path for his future.

During his school days at Songpa Middle School and Changhyun High School, his primary childhood dream was to become an architect or a furniture designer. Fascinated by structural design and the idea of creating physical spaces after seeing striking photographs of the professions, he spent a lot of time imagining blueprint layouts. However, as he grew older, he began to feel uncertain about how to break into the industry, admitting he had “no idea where to start”.

That uncertainty pushed him to explore other creative outlets. Watching films—particularly being deeply inspired by Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic—ignited a quiet spark within him, redirecting his passion toward the art of storytelling and acting.

Staying Grounded on the Road to Stardom

Possessing striking good looks and an impressive height of 1.86 meters, Song Kang was frequently scouted and offered opportunities to become a K-pop idol before his acting debut. True to his focused nature, he turned down those idol offers to focus entirely on studying his craft, eventually enrolling in the Department of Film Arts at Konkuk University.

Reflecting on his journey, the quiet boy from Suwon who balanced piano scales with athletic hobbies built an unexpectedly rich foundation. Those early years of discipline, a mix of structural creativity, and a deep appreciation for the arts ultimately shaped the versatile, deeply expressive actor we know today.
