Is Vikas Divyakirti an IAS Officer? Clearing the Confusion

When millions of young Indians think of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exams—widely regarded as one of the toughest competitive exams in the world—certain names immediately come to mind. Chief among them is Dr. Vikas Divyakirti.

As the founder of Drishti IAS, a premier coaching institute based in Delhi, he is a household name, an internet sensation, and a mentor to generations of civil service aspirants. Because of his deep expertise, authority on administrative matters, and frequent references to government functioning, a common question often pops up: Is Vikas Divyakirti an IAS officer?

The short answer is no, he is not an active IAS officer. However, his relationship with the civil services is much closer—and more fascinating—than a simple “no” implies.

The Real Story: He Cleared the Exam, But Chose a Different Path

While Dr. Vikas Divyakirti is not an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer today, he actually cleared the prestigious UPSC Civil Services Examination on his very first attempt in 1996, securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 384.

Following his success, he was inducted into the Central Secretariat Service (CSS) of the Government of India and served as a Section Officer in the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi.
