How to Add Your Own Songs to Spotify: The Complete Guide

Whether you are an independent artist looking to test out an unreleased demo, a vinyl collector ripping rare tracks, or someone with a hard drive full of niche live recordings that aren’t on streaming, Spotify’s Local Files feature is a hidden superpower. It lets you blend your personal audio collection seamlessly into your everyday playlists right alongside mainstream tracks.

This comprehensive guide will walk you through unlocking, syncing, and listening to your own music on both desktop and mobile devices.

What You Need Before You Begin

Before diving into the settings, make sure you meet a few technical requirements:

  • Supported Formats: Spotify reads standard audio formats like MP3, MP4, and M4P (audio-only). Formats like FLAC or WAV will need to be converted to MP3 first to ensure they register properly.
  • The App Requirement: You cannot use the Spotify Web Player to add or play local files. You must use the Spotify desktop application (Windows or Mac) and/or the mobile app.
  • Network Syncing: If you want to listen to your custom tracks on your phone or tablet, both your computer and mobile device must be connected to the exact same Wi-Fi network during the syncing process.

Step 1: Enable Local Files on Desktop

Your computer acts as the master hub for importing local tracks. Setting it up takes less than a minute:

  1. Open the Spotify desktop app on your Mac or PC.
  2. Click on your profile picture (or avatar icon) in the top-right corner and select Settings.
  3. Scroll down until you find the Your Library section.
  4. Toggle the switch next to Show Local Files to the On (green) position.
  5. Underneath, you will see a section titled Show songs from. Spotify automatically defaults to folders like Downloads and iTunes. If your music is saved elsewhere, click Add a source and select the specific folder on your computer housing your audio tracks.

Once enabled, look at the left-hand sidebar of your desktop library. You will see a new playlist or folder titled Local Files populated with all your compatible audio.

Step 2: Organize Your Tracks into Playlists

To make your custom songs easy to listen to—and crucially, to port them over to your mobile devices—you should bundle them into a playlist:

  1. Create a New Playlist in your Spotify desktop app (
