How to Handle Video Rotation in Google Vids
Google Vids has quickly become a go-to tool within the Google Workspace ecosystem for crafting quick presentations, marketing clips, and team updates. However, if you have ever imported a smartphone video or a downloaded clip only to find it sideways or upside down, you might have run into a surprising roadblock: Google Vids does not currently feature a native tool to rotate video clips directly on the canvas.
While text boxes, shapes, and static images can be easily spun around using rotation handles, video layers lack an on-screen spin button.
What You Can (and Can’t) Natively Format
To save you time hunting through menus, here is how Google Vids treats different canvas elements:
| Element Type | Natively Rotatable? | Formatting Control |
| :— | :— | :— |
| Text Boxes | Yes | Use rotation handles or the Arrange menu. |
| Shapes & Icons | Yes | Use rotation handles or the Arrange menu. |
| Static Images | Yes | Full size and rotation formatting options in the side panel. |
| Video Clips | No | Limited to size, position, volume, and playback timing. |
The Workaround: How to Fix Video Orientation Before Uploading
Because you cannot spin video tracks natively, the secret to a seamless project is correcting your file’s orientation before dropping it into your timeline. This 30-second fix ensures your presentation stays professional:
1. On Windows (Using the Photos App)
- Right-click your video file in your folder structure, select Open with, and choose Photos.
- Click the Edit & Create button or look for the crop/rotate icon.
- Tap the Rotate icon until the video is right-side up (each click turns it 90 degrees).
- Click Save copy to export your newly oriented file.
2. On Mac (Using QuickTime Player)
- Double-click the video file to open it in QuickTime Player.
- Go to the top menu bar and select Edit.
- Choose Rotate Left or Rotate Right until the layout is corrected.
- Close the window and click Save when prompted.
3. On Chromebooks or Mobile (Using Quick Online Tools)
- If you are working on ChromeOS, utilize a secure, browser-based utility (such as Ezgif, Clideo, or Kapwing).
- Upload your video file, apply a 90-degree or 180-degree rotation, and download the corrected MP4 file.
Bringing Your Fixed Video Into Google Vids
Once your file is facing the correct direction, integrating it is effortless:
- Open your project in Google Vids.
- Upload the corrected video file from your computer or directly from your connected Google Drive.
- Drag and drop the clip into your timeline and use the framing handles to scale or position it perfectly within your scene.
Pro Tip: Always double-check your raw footage orientation before building out complex multi-scene templates. Catching an inverted clip early saves you from having to re-upload assets and manually re-sync your audio tracks later!
